Het jaarlijkse Foyer Event in Birmingham

Zoals ieder jaar organiseerde de Engelse Foyer Federation ook dit jaar in Birmingham een bijeenkomst voor alle medewerkers en leidinggevenden van Foyers in en buiten Engeland. De Engelsen noemen dit “Inspiring days”. Samen met twee Groningse collega’s ging ik naar het event.
Dit jaar was het thema: Open Talent. Dit thema staat centraal in het strategisch plan van de Foyer Federation voor de komende jaren en omvat het idee om alle talenten van deelnemers, medewerkers en betrokkenen te ontsluiten. Het aanbod van de Foyers wordt de komende jaren vanuit dit idee van Open Talent ingericht.
Een zeer inspirerende aanpak die veel enthousiasme opleverde bij de aanwezigen in Birmingham.
Twee dagen lang waren er workshops, lezingen en vooral gesprekken over Foyers, deelnemers en de nieuwe aanpak van Open Talent.
Er waren Engelsen, Ieren en een Australiër aanwezig naast veel Engelsen.
Omdat er veel ruimte is voor uitwisseling zijn deze dagen ook voor buitenlanders zeer zinvol. Ik wil iedereen dan ook oproepen om volgend jaar deel te nemen aan de jaarlijkse Foyer dagen.
Er is ook gesproken over het creëren van de mogelijkheid om uitwisselingsprogramma’s voor deelnemers van Foyers te organiseren. Iedereen die daarin geïnteresseerd is, kan hierover contact met Charlotte opnemen (charlotte.schippers@hetnet.nl)

Foyer staff, young people and others working in the sector gathered at The Abbey Centre in Westminster on Wednesday 6th April for the annual Foyer Federation Policy Event.
This year's focus, Your Future Not Your Problem: Giving Young People a Stake in the Future, was kicked off with a welcome speech from Foyer Federation Chief Executive, Jane Slowey. Throughout the day guests also heard from Director of Innovation at the Foyer Federation Colin Falconer, CEO of the National Housing Federation David Orr and Research Programme Manager at the Joseph Rowntree Foundation Kathleen Kelly. All speakers highlighted the importance of encouraging positive, holistic approaches in services for young people. David Orr stressed the importance of Foyers thinking about what they offer their managing housing associations in order to safeguard their futures. Kathleen Kelly made the point, "we need to hold on to making a positive difference in young people's lives".
Young people played a central role throughout the event and were involved in: table discussions about the ideal ‘youth offer'; leading question and answer sessions on how positive services and approaches benefit young people; and presenting what they had achieved through their involvement in the Foyer Federation initiatives Working Assets, Creating a Better Youth Offer and the newest campaign, Open Talent. Open Talent is about developing a more positive approach to the way the transition to adult independence is handled. It is about giving young people the skills, resources and opportunities they need to achieve their goals and make a positive contribution to society. Mark, a resident from Market Wells Foyer in Birkenhead (one of the Foyers currently piloting the Open Talent approach) explained:
"Being involved in Open Talent has already made a real impact in my life - it gives you chances that you'd probably have to wait years to get otherwise, if at all. The Open Talent approach makes opportunities more accessible."
The message of the day was clear - young people are our future so we can't afford to write groups of them off as ‘problems' (NEET, drug/alcohol mis-users, teenage parents, offender, care leaver). To unlock the true potential that lies dormant in so many of our young people we need an approach that focuses on harnessing talent. As one resident from Crewe Foyer said during the youth led discussion: "get rid of disadvantaged thinking!"
